What  is Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal medicine, like acupuncture, is just one part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been tested and tried for thousands of years, and is still being developed even today.

Much of herbal medicine is plant based, with the leaves, flowers, seeds, bark and branches being used. A small portion of herbal medicine are from animals or minerals.

There are several forms in which herbal medicine can be prepared;
- Decoctions – This is the traditional form, and requires the raw herbs to be boiled numerous times to create a concentrated extract of the herbs. It is time consuming, but very effective

- Granules/powders – The herbs are decocted by the herbal company, and are combined with an excipient, usually corn starch or potato starch, to create the granules. This means all that is required for you at home is to boil the kettle and add the hot water to the herbs, just as if you were making your morning cup of coffee. Granules are easy and quick to prepare, and with the advancement of technology, have comparable results to that of decoctions.

- Herbal pills and capsules – herbal pills are decocted herbal liquid combined with raw powdered herbs to create a small black ball. Capsules usually contain the powered form of herbs. They are more convenient, although may take longer to have an effect.

- Liniments and lotions – Great for topical applications for pain management, inflammation, or for the treatment of skin conditions.
