Answers to common questions.
About the treatment
A full history is taken, and your tongue may be looked at and your pulse taken, after which a TCM diagnosis is made. If you have any test results or x-rays, you are encouraged to bring them in, as well as a list of any medications, vitamins and supplements you may be on.
Only sterilised, single-use acupuncture needles are used, which are disposed of after each treatment. A treatment may consist of a combination of acupuncture, cupping, tuina or moxa, based on what is best for you at the time of the consult, and you may be prescribed a herbal formula, vitamins and/or minerals.

For a treatment, you may be asked to remove your outer layer of clothing, but to keep your underwear on. If you feel more comfortable you may wear, or change into shorts before a treatment. This is asked to allow access to the acupoints that may normally be difficult to locate when wearing pants. Treatment may also be performed on both the back and front, such as massage or cupping on the back, and acupuncture on your abdomen, and this saves you being tangled up in a gown when we ask you to turn over. During a treatment, you will be covered with a towel for warmth and modesty.
What does acupuncture feel like? Will it hurt ?
Acupuncture needles are very fine, and generally there is no pain. There may be a sensation when the needle is inserted, like a mosquito bite, or there may be no sensation at all. Once the needle is in, some people may feel sensations such as tingling, warmth, numbness or a sense of heaviness where the needle was inserted. The sensation felt varies from person to person, and from treatment to treatment.
What to expect after the treatment ?
This will vary from person to person. Some people may not feel the effects of acupuncture until 24-48 hours after a treatment, although many already notice an improvement before they walk out the door. Depending on the severity of the condition, it may take repeated treatments before there is significant improvement.
What to do after a treatment ?
After a treatment, you may feel tired or some people find they have a lot more energy. It is advised that after a treatment you take it easy for the day, and even if you find you have a lot of energy after a treatment to not overdo it and wear yourself out. Drink plenty of water afterwards to help flush out any toxins that may have been released, and refrain from alcohol for 24 hours after a treatment. Be sure to eat plenty of good food, avoid greasy, fatty and sugary foods.

If you feel the need to take a nap after a treatment, don't fight it, this is your body healing, and be sure to go to bed early. It is also important to keep warm, and avoid sitting in front of a fan or air conditioner, during the warmer months.
